DESIGN STUDIO VII, LAU DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE, sec 33 & 34

DESIGN STUDIO VII, LAU DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE, sec 33 & 34, FALL 2012

Midterm  (Nov 2012):

Moving from quantitative to qualitative diagrams & main concept.

Students will have to produce abstract diagrams that comment on the existing urban fabric and overall dynamics of Mar Mikhael, from social conditions and property ownership among different social groups, to more subjective notions of connections or disconnections within the wider area.
Advanced students will have physical models of the site, illustrating their main concept.

These diagrams will act as an abstract yet firm mold for subsequent analyses. They are innuendos of architectural gestures and architectural space itself, revealing generic intentions of possible nods / circulation / mass and void that come up to surface after the quantitative site analysis. Any kind of technique is encouraged: from 2d / 3d graphics to 3d models / sketches / abstract physical models and collage techniques. Small scale interventions or more ambitious / utopian gestures are welcome, in an effort to answer and maybe pose even more questions regarding a sustainable growth though architecture in Mar Mikhael and surrounding areas.
